General Instructions for Applicants
BRCA Research and Education (CureBRCA) Grants
The BRCA Research & Cure Alliance (CureBRCA) will consider funding BRCA-related initiatives that involve prevention, detection, screening, and/or treatment for men at risk for BRCA-related cancers. Applications will be evaluated by CureBRCA leadership, the CureBRCA Scientific Advisory Committee, and if appropriate: patients, carriers, and/or genetic counselors.
Desired Proposals/Men affected by BRCA mutations
All grant applications must address one of the following: identification of at-risk carriers, cancer prevention, early detection and screening for cancer, or novel treatment approaches pertaining to BRCA-related cancers. BRCA research, educational initiatives, or outreach efforts that cater to men who are at risk for BRCA mutations are desired. Applications that include collaboration, either across institutions, or within a single institution will be prioritized. Applications submitted from junior faculty or from underrepresented groups are encouraged.
Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC)
The Scientific Advisory Committee, composed of 7 members, will provide overall guidance regarding CureBRCA’s research and education funding strategy. Committee members are volunteers and are not compensated, and must adhere to an annual Conflict of Interest Policy. SAC members are eligible to apply for CureBRCA research or education grants. However, SAC members must disclose all conflicts, will not review their own research proposals, and will be recused from any peer reviewer discussions pertaining to conflicted research applications.
Application Review Process
CureBRCA has an “open” application process; researchers or clinicians do not need an invitation to apply. Each submitted application will be reviewed by the SAC Committee. Applicants are prohibited from contacting SAC members about their proposals prior to review. All applicants must submit an online application.
Eligibility
Research project applicants must be an MD, DO, or PhD, with preferred training, clinical, or research interest in urology, oncology, primary care, genetics, public health, or epidemiology. Non-research related projects can be submitted by genetic counselors.
Funding
Applicants can request up to $500,000. A budget description is required. CureBRCA does not fund administrative overhead, or “indirects” costs.
Evaluation
The SAC Committee will evaluate research applications based on: 1) the quality of the research (e.g., originality, feasibility); 2) expected research impact (e.g., importance of the research question, probability that the project will lead to meaningful progress or disruptive innovation in the BRCA field); and 3) the quality of the applicant and research environment. SAC Members will make funding recommendations to CureBRCA leadership. Applications that include collaboration, either across institutions, or within a single institution are preferred. Applications submitted from junior faculty or from underrepresented groups are encouraged. Measurable outcomes are required.
